RESUMO

The growing problem of industrial pollution in developing countries, especially Ethiopia, has sparked serious issues about the quality of the water, particularly when it comes to the effluent from wet coffee processing industries. In response, this study investigates the potential of utilizing natural coagulants, Acanthus sennii C., Moringa stenopetala B., and Aloe vera L., either individually or in combination, for the treatment of coffee effluent. Methodologically, the study systematically varies operational parameters, including coagulant dose, pH levels, stirring speed, and stirring time, to evaluate their impact on coagulation efficiency. Experimental data undergo statistical analysis, employing ANOVA, while computational optimization techniques are employed using Design Expert software to determine optimal conditions. Notably, the blended form of the three coagulants emerges as particularly promising, yielding optimal conditions of 0.750 g/L coagulant dosage, pH 8.76, agitation speed of 80.73 rpm, and agitation time of 19.23 min. Under these optimized conditions, the blended coagulant achieves remarkable removal efficiencies, approximately 99.99% for color and 98.7% for turbidity. These findings underscore the efficiency of natural coagulants, particularly in blended form, for sustainable wastewater treatment in wet coffee processing.

OBJECTIVE: Fluconazole (FLZ) is a drug widely used in the treatment of fungal infections including the treatment of immunocompromised patients, HIV-infected patients, and cancer patients. Critically ill patients often require the administration of drugs with parenteral nutrition (PN). The safety of this combination should be defined before the drug and PN are administered in one infusion line. This study aimed to determine the compatibility of FLZ with six selected multichamber bag parenteral nutrition. METHODS: FLZ solution for infusion was combined with PNs in appropriate proportions, considering most clinical situations resulting from different possible administration rates of the preparations. Samples were visually assessed, and pH, osmolality, turbidity, particle size (dynamic light scattering and light obscuration methods), and zeta potential were measured. These measurements were made immediately after combining the solutions and after 4 h of storage at 23 ± 1°C. RESULTS: FLZ combined with PNs did not cause changes observed visually. The turbidity of the samples was <0.4 NTU. The average particle size of the lipid emulsion was below 300 nm, and the PFAT5 parameter was ≤0.02%. The absolute value of the zeta potential of the PN + FLZ samples was higher for 5 out of 6 PN than the corresponding value for PN immediately after activation. Changes in pH and osmolality during 4 h of sample observations were within acceptable limits. CONCLUSION: Compatibility of the FLZ with six multichamber bag PN was confirmed. Hence, those preparations can be administered to patients in one infusion line using the Y-site.

This article presents a set of data obtained during the evaluation of a horizontal flow tubular flocculator for the provision of drinking water in developing communities. The HFTF is presented as an alternative technology to replace conventional flocculators, allowing high efficiency in the subsequent sedimentation and filtration processes. For obtaining the data, experimental tests were carried out using lengths of 68.4 m and 97.6 m for the HFTF, these lengths were combined with flow rates of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and 2.0 L/s, as well as raw water turbidities of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 NTU. The data set generated from measurements and observations made during experimental field tests is detailed. The resulting data set covers the main parameters that determine the quality of drinking water, such as turbidity and colour, as well as flocculation efficiency data. The data from the experimental system were compared with a conventional treatment plant that has a baffle flocculator. Likewise, data on the retention time and velocity gradient are presented that allowed the hydraulic characteristics of the HFTF are evaluated. This data set has significant potential for reuse in future research and development related to water treatment technologies in developing community settings. Detailed data has been collected on various operating conditions of the HFTF, such as different lengths, water flow rates and turbidity levels, as well as measurements of key parameters such as turbidity, colour, flocculation efficiency, retention time and velocity gradient, these Data could be used in future research and development related to water treatment technologies. Furthermore, a comparison of data from the experimental system with a conventional treatment plant provides useful insight into the relative performance of different water treatment technologies, which could be of interest to researchers, system designers and public policymakers in the field of drinking water supply in developing communities.

The size-controlled synthesis of liquid metal nanoparticles is necessary in a variety of applications. Sonication is a common method for breaking down bulk liquid metals into small particles, yet the influence of critical factors such as liquid metal composition has remained elusive. Our study employs high-speed imaging to unravel the mechanism of liquid metal particle formation during mechanical agitation. Gallium-based liquid metals, with and without secondary metals of bismuth, indium, and tin, are analyzed to observe the effect of cavitation and surface eruption during sonication and particle release. The impact of the secondary metal inclusion is investigated on liquid metals' surface tension, solution turbidity, and size distribution of the generated particles. Our work evidences that there is an inverse relationship between the surface tension and the ability of liquid metals to be broken down by sonication. We show that even for 0.22 at. % of bismuth in gallium, the surface tension is significantly decreased from 558 to 417 mN/m (measured in Milli-Q water), resulting in an enhanced particle generation rate: 3.6 times increase in turbidity and ∼43% reduction in the size of particles for bismuth in gallium liquid alloy compared to liquid gallium for the same sonication duration. The effect of particles' size on the photocatalysis of the annealed particles is also presented to show the applicability of the process in a proof-of-concept demonstration. This work contributes to a broader understanding of the synthesis of nanoparticles, with controlled size and characteristics, via mechanical agitation of liquid metals for diverse applications.

Phase separation is an important mechanism for regulating various cellular functions. The EARLY FLOWERING 3 (ELF3) protein, an essential element of the EVENING COMPLEX (EC) involved in circadian clock regulation, has been shown to undergo phase separation. ELF3 is known to significantly influence elongation growth and flowering time regulation, and this is postulated to be due to whether the protein is in the dilute or phase-separated state. Here, we present a brief overview of methods for analyzing ELF3 phase separation in vitro, including the generation of phase diagrams as a function of pH and salt versus protein concentrations, optical microscopy, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP), and turbidity assays.

Salivary turbidity is a promising indicator for evaluating oral hygiene. This study proposed a wearable mouthguard-type sensor for continuous and unconstrained measurement of salivary turbidity. The sensor evaluated turbidity by measuring the light transmittance of saliva with an LED and a phototransistor sealed inside a double-layered mouthguard. The sensor was also embedded with a Bluetooth wireless module, enabling the wireless measurement of turbidity. The mouthguard materials (polyethylene terephthalate-glycol and ethylene-vinyl acetate) and the wavelength of the LED (405 nm) were experimentally determined to achieve high sensitivity in salivary turbidity measurement. The turbidity quantification characteristic of the proposed sensor was evaluated using a turbidity standard solution, and the sensor was capable of turbidity quantification over a wide dynamic range of 1-4000 FTU (formazine turbidity unit), including reported salivary turbidity (400-800 FTU). In vitro turbidity measurement using a saliva sample showed 553 FTU, which is equivalent to the same sample measured with a spectrophotometer (576 FTU). Moreover, in vivo experiments also showed results equivalent to that measured with a spectrophotometer, and wireless measurement of salivary turbidity was realized using the mouthguard-type sensor. Based on these results, the proposed mouthguard-type sensor has promising potential for the unconstrained continuous evaluation of oral hygiene.

Use of Grewia biopolymer as a natural coagulant aid was explored in a dual-coagulant system (conventional coagulant + biopolymer) for wastewater treatment. Such use not only improved turbidity removal efficiency over a wide pH range (5-9) but also helped reducing the concentration demand of inorganic coagulants by 25-50 %. Response surface methodology was employed for investigating the interaction between factors (initial pH, coagulant, and biopolymer concentration) affecting coagulation/flocculation of aqueous laterite suspension, and process optimization for more than 80 % turbidity removal in the desired final pH range (6-7). Mechanisms potentially involved in coagulation/flocculation using biopolymer was elucidated. Techno-economic assessment indicated the feasibility of pilot-scale production of the biopolymer and its use in wastewater treatment. This study demonstrates that Grewia biopolymer has the potential to be used as a coagulant aid and will help researchers select appropriate markets for further cost reduction and successful implementation of biopolymer-based wastewater treatment.

This study investigated the individual and combined effects of l-arginine, l-lysine, and NaCl on the ultrastructure of porcine myofibrils to uncover the mechanism underlying meat tenderization. Arg or Lys alone shortened A-bands and damaged M-lines, while NaCl alone destroyed M- and Z-lines. Overall, Arg and Lys cooperated with NaCl to destroy the myofibrillar ultrastructure. Moreover, these two amino acids conjoined with NaCl to increase myosin solubility, actin band intensity, and the protein concentration of the actomyosin supernatant. However, they decreased the turbidity and particle size of both myosin and actomyosin solutions, and the remaining activities of Ca2+- and Mg2+-ATPase. The current results revealed that Arg/Lys combined with NaCl to extract myosin and dissociate actomyosin, thereby aggravating the destruction of the myofibrillar ultrastructure. The present results provide a good explanation for the previous phenomenon that Arg and Lys cooperated with NaCl to improve meat tenderness.

PURPOSE: Special consideration is needed when intravenous drugs are administered simultaneously using a Y-site connector. This study aimed to investigate the physical compatibility of colistin with 6 analgesics at concentrations commonly used in clinical practice. METHODS: A pharmaceutical preparation of colistin was dissolved according to the manufacturer's instructions and diluted to a concentration of 1.5 mg/mL or 0.67 mg/mL (of colistin base). Simulated administration via Y-site infusion set was performed by mixing 5 mL of colistin solution with an equal volume of a solution of one of 6 intravenous analgesics. Infusion solutions of ibuprofen, ketoprofen, metamizole sodium, morphine sulfate, paracetamol, and tramadol hydrochloride were studied. For each analgesic tested, concentrates for injection were diluted with 2 solvents, resulting in 11 different combinations with each concentration of the colistin solution. The mixtures were visually inspected, and their turbidity was measured directly after mixing and at 3 consecutive time points (30, 60, and 120 minutes). Additionally, the pH of the mixtures was measured after 120 minutes and compared with the pH of the analgesic and the colistin solutions. RESULTS: During visual inspection with the unaided eye, no precipitate formation or gas evolution was observed in any of the tested analgesics except for sodium metamizole, where the yellow color of the solutions was observed. For samples containing the mixture of ibuprofen and colistin, the turbidity measurements revealed the presence of turbidity in the studied mixtures. The greatest change in pH relative to the value immediately after preparation was noted for combinations of ketoprofen and morphine sulfate with the tested antibiotic. CONCLUSION: Colistin was found to be incompatible with ibuprofen and metamizole sodium formulations. It should also not be combined with morphine sulfate due to the significant differences in the pH value of the preparations. The colistin 0.67 mg/mL and 1.5 mg/mL infusion solutions were physically compatible with ketoprofen, tramadol hydrochloride, and paracetamol.

Global sustainable development faces several challenges in addressing the needs of a growing population. Regarding food industries, the heightening pressure to meet these needs has resulted in increased waste generation. Thus, recognising these wastes as valuable resources is crucial to integrating sustainable models into current production systems. For instance, the current 24 billion tons of nutrient-rich livestock wastewater (LW) generated yearly could be recovered and valorised via biological uptake through microalgal biomass. Microalgae-based livestock wastewater treatment (MbLWT) has emerged as an effective technology for nutrient recovery, specifically targeting carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. However, the viability and efficacy of these systems rely on the characteristics of LW, including organic matter and ammonium concentration, content of suspended solids, and microbial load. Thus, this systematic literature review aims to provide guidance towards implementing an integral MbLWT system for nutrient control and recovery, discussing several pre-treatments used in literature to overcome the challenges regarding LW as a suitable media for microalgae cultivation.

Major floods pose a severe threat to coastal receiving environments, negatively impacting environmental health and ecosystem services through direct smothering with sediment and nutrient loading. This study examined the short and long-term impacts of the February 2022 major flood event on mud extent and sediment nitrogen flux in Moreton Bay (the Bay), a large, sub-tropical embayment in Southeast Queensland, Australia. Short-term impacts were assessed three days after the flood peak by sampling surface water at 47 sites in the direction of the predominant circulation pattern. Longer-term impacts were assessed by undertaking an intensive sediment survey of 223 sites and a nutrient flux experiment using sediment core incubations to simulate calm and resuspension conditions for the four key sediment classes. Short-term impacts revealed elevated turbidity levels extended across the Bay but were highest at the Brisbane River mouth, ammonium concentrations varied inversely with surface turbidity, whereas nitrate concentrates closely tracked surface turbidity. The sediment survey confirmed fine sediment deposition across 98 % of the Bay. Porewater within the upper 10 cm contained a standing pool of 280 t of ammonium, with concentrations more than three orders of magnitude higher than overlying surface waters. The nutrient flux experiment revealed an order of magnitude higher sediment ammonium flux rate in the sandy mud sediment class compared to the other sediment classes; and for simulated resuspension conditions compared to calm conditions for sand, muddy sand, and mud sediment classes. Scaling across the whole Bay, we estimated a mean annual sediment flux of 17,700 t/year ammonium, with a range of 13,500 to 21,900 t/year. Delivery of fine sediments by major floods over the last 50 years now impact >98 % of the benthic zone and provide a major loading pathway of available nitrogen to surface waters of Moreton Bay; representing a significant threat to ecosystem health.

Human use index caused by population pressure in Opa catchment Ile Ife, Southwestern Nigeria, has resulted in catchment denudation, accelerated erosion, and sediment delivery into a man-made (1978) reservoir (Opa) in the catchment. This study is aimed at evaluating the suspended sediment balance of Opa reservoir with a view to ascertain the annual siltation rate. River discharges, water levels, suspended sediment concentrations/yield, and flow velocities were monitored, and data collected from all the tributaries of the Opa reservoir and the spillway (outlet) in the period 2017-2018. Water samples collected were subjected to gravimetric analysis, and the results utilized to obtain sediment rating curves and to compute the suspended sediment balance. Suspended sediment inflow from the six sub-catchments ranged from 8.49 to 29.05tons/ha, with a total inflow of 1146.50tons/ha into the reservoir during the hydrological year. The corresponding outflow through the spillway was 615.70tons/ha. 530.80tons/ha was sequestered in the reservoir, equivalent to an estimate of 46% suspended sediment deposited in the reservoir. The high sediment yield in Opa reservoir is due to the dredging and clearing of the river channels in the catchment of any impediment thereby enhancing sediment delivery into the reservoir. Sediment loads were higher in the rainy season suggesting catchment erosion as the main factor responsible for the sediment yield into the reservoir. The study concluded that the positive suspended sediment balance suggests sediment sequestration with an increasing tendency for accelerated elimination of the wetland in the face of poor environmental management and enhanced human activities.

Diadromous fish have exhibited a dramatic decline since the end of the 20th century. The allis shad (Alosa alosa) population in the Gironde-Garonne-Dordogne (GGD) system, once considered as a reference in Europe, remains low despite a fishing ban in 2008. One hypothesis to explain this decline is that the downstream migration and growth dynamics of young stages have changed due to environmental modifications in the rivers and estuary. We retrospectively analysed juvenile growth and migration patterns using otoliths from adults caught in the GGD system 30 years apart during their spawning migration, in 1987 and 2016. We coupled otolith daily growth increments and laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements of Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, and Mn:Ca ratios along the longest growth axis from hatching to an age of 100 days (i.e., during the juvenile stage). A back-calculation allowed us to estimate the size of juveniles at the entrance into the brackish estuary. Based on the geochemistry data, we distinguished four different zones that juveniles encountered during their downstream migration: freshwater, fluvial estuary, brackish estuary, and lower estuary. We identified three migration patterns during the first 100 days of their life: (a) Individuals that reached the lower estuary zone, (b) individuals that reached the brackish estuary zone, and (c) individuals that reached the fluvial estuary zone. On average, juveniles from the 1987 subsample stayed slightly longer in freshwater than juveniles from the 2016 subsample. In addition, juveniles from the 2016 subsample entered the brackish estuary at a smaller size. This result suggests that juveniles from the 2016 subsample might have encountered more difficult conditions during their downstream migration, which we attribute to a longer exposure to the turbid maximum zone. This assumption is supported by the microchemical analyses of the otoliths, which suggests based on wider Mn:Ca peaks that juveniles in 2010s experienced a longer period of physiological stress during their downstream migration than juveniles in 1980s. Finally, juveniles from the 2016 subsample took longer than 100 days to exit the lower estuary than we would have expected from previous studies. Adding a new marker (i.e., Ba:Ca) helped us refine the interpretation of the downstream migration for each individual.

Using optical density at 600 nm (OD600) to measure the microbial concentration is a popular approach due to its advantages like quick response and non-destructive. However, the OD600 measurement might be affected by the metabolic pigment, and it would become invalid when the solution dilution is insufficient. To overcome these issues, we proposed to adopt a more robust wavelength at 890 nm to quantify the attenuation of transmission light. After selecting this light source, we designed the light path and the circuit of the online monitoring device. Meanwhile, the random forest algorithm was introduced for temperature compensation and improving the stability of the device. This device was verified by monitoring the microbial concentration of four strains (Yeast, Bacillus, Arthrobacter, and Escherichia coli). The experimental result suggested that the mean absolute percentage error reached 4.11 %, 4.28 %, 4.49 %, and 4.53 % respectively, which is helpful to improve the accuracy of microbial concentration measurement.

Detection sensitivity of aquatic species using environmental DNA (eDNA) generally decreases in turbid water but is poorly characterized. In this study, eDNA detection targeted delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), a critically endangered estuarine fish associated with turbid water. eDNA sampling in the field was first paired with a trawl survey. Species-specific detection using a Taqman qPCR assay showed concordance between the methods, but a weak eDNA signal. Informed by the results of field sampling, an experiment was designed to assess how turbidity and filtration methods influence detection of a rare target. Water from non-turbid (5 NTU) and turbid (50 NTU) estuarine sites was spiked with small volumes (0.5 and 1 mL) of water from a delta smelt tank to generate low eDNA concentrations. Samples were filtered using four filter types: cartridge filters (pore size 0.45 µm) and 47 mm filters (glass fiber, pore size 1.6 µm and polycarbonate, pore sizes 5 and 10 µm). Prefiltration was also tested as an addition to the filtration protocol for turbid water samples. eDNA copy numbers were analyzed using a censored data method for qPCR data. The assay limits and lack of PCR inhibition indicated an optimized assay. Glass fiber filters yielded the highest detection rates and eDNA copies in non-turbid and turbid water. Prefiltration improved detection in turbid water only when used with cartridge and polycarbonate filters. Statistical analysis identified turbidity as a significant effect on detection probability and eDNA copies detected; filter type and an interaction between filter type and prefilter were significant effects on eDNA copies detected, suggesting that particulate-filter interactions can affect detection sensitivity. Pilot experiments and transparent criteria for positive detection could improve eDNA surveys of rare species in turbid environments.

This study aims to determine the COD, NH3-N and turbidity disposal efficiencies from leachate in the Bingöl landfill and highlight the electrocoagulation (EC) process's performance in removing these pollutants. After establishing that landfill leachate was intermediate aged, its characteristics were identified using physical, chemical and elemental analyses. Six parallel-connected electrode plates with stainless steel as the cathode and aluminium as the anode were used to construct an electrocoagulation cell. After a 40-min treatment interval, the optimal disposal efficiencies for COD and turbidity from the leachate were determined to be 87% and 62%, respectively, at pH 5. Following a 40-min reaction, BOD5 concentration and BOD5/COD ratio were determined to be 85.75 mg O2/L and 0.64, respectively, at pH 5. At a NaCl concentration of 10 mM, the optimum disposal efficiency for NH3-N was determined to be 33%. The reaction kinetics matched pseudo-first-order (PFO) kinetics due to high correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.93-0.99) in removing COD, NH3-N and turbidity under different experimental conditions. The optimal reaction rate constants were determined as 2.93 × 10-2 min-1, 1.92 × 10-2 min-1 and 7.3 × 10-3 min-1 for the disposal of COD, NH3-N and turbidity, respectively. Energy consumption, unit energy consumption and total consumption cost rose in the EC process when the current density was augmented from 15 to 25 mA/cm2.

Satellite imagery has emerged as the predominant method for performing spatial and temporal water quality analyses on a global scale. This study employs remote sensing techniques to monitor the water quality of the Bisalpur wetland during both the pre and post-monsoon seasons in 2013 and 2022. The study aims to investigate the prospective use of Landsat-8 (L8) and Landsat-9 (L9) data acquired from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) for the temporal monitoring of turbidity. Concurrently, the study examines the relationship of turbidity with water surface temperature (WST) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations. We utilized visible and near-infrared (NIR) bands to conduct a single-band spectral response analysis of wetland turbidity. The results reveal a notable increase in turbidity concentration in May 2022, as this timeframe recorded the highest reflectance (0.28) in the NIR band. Additionally, the normalized difference turbidity index (NDTI) formula was used to assess the overall turbidity levels in the wetland. The results indicated that the highest concentration was observed in May 2013, with a value of 0.37, while the second-highest concentration was recorded in May 2022, with a value of 0.25. The WST was calculated using thermal band-10 in conjunction with Chlorophyll-a, utilizing the normalized difference chlorophyll index (NDCI). The regression analysis shows a positive correlation between turbidity and WST, as indicated by R2 values of 0.41 in May 2013 and 0.40 in May 2022. Furthermore, a robust positive relationship exists between turbidity and Chl-a, with a high R2 value of 0.71 in May 2022. These findings emphasize the efficacy of the L8 and L9 datasets for conducting temporal analyses of wetland turbidity, WST, and Chl-a. Additionally, this research underscores the critical role of satellite imagery in assessing and managing water quality, particularly in situations where in-situ data is lacking.

Stoneworts (Charales) are green algae that represent an important food resource for many waterbird species in Europe and elsewhere. Browsing avian herbivores (e.g. swan, goose, duck and coot species) consume Charales plant vegetative parts, by head-dipping, up-ending or diving. A lower fibre content and longer growing season may make Charales as attractive to such herbivores as sympatric submerged higher plant species in some circumstances. Charales respond to environmental stress (e.g. drought) by producing abundant diaspores, in the form of oospores (sexual) and bulbils (asexual), both rich in starch, generating abundant food for waterbirds at critical stages in their annual migratory cycles. Waterbirds feed on these by diving (e.g. common pochard Aythya ferina and red-crested pochard Netta rufina) or by filtering from the water column (e.g. dabbling duck species), ensuring dispersal of sexually produced and vegetative diaspores locally (because of predator swamping) and remotely (through endo- and ectozoochorous dispersal by long-distance migratory waterbirds). Greater invertebrate density and diversity associated with Charales canopies enhances their attractiveness over other submerged macrophyte beds to diving predators [e.g. tufted duck Aythya fuligula, common pochard and Eurasian coot Fulica atra (hereafter coot)]. Fish fry preying on these invertebrates use such vegetation as predator cover, in turn providing prey for avian piscivores such as grebes and cormorants. Abundant Charales contribute to maintaining a transparent water column due to canopy density, nutrient effects, dampening of sedimentation/remobilisation of suspended matter and nutrients and allelopathic effects on other plants (especially phytoplankton). Shallow, relatively eutrophic waters can flip between clear-water high-biodiversity (where Charales thrive) and turbid species-poor depauperate stable states (lacking Charales). Shifts between turbid conditions and rich submerged Charales beds have profound elevating effects on aquatic diversity, to which waterbirds show rapid aggregative responses, making them ideal indicator species of ecological change; in the case of Charales specialists (such as red-crested and common pochard), indicators of the presence and abundance of these plants. Large-bodied colonial nesting birds (e.g. cormorants, gulls, heron and egrets) aggregating along lake shores contribute high N and P loadings to water bodies sensitive to such external and internal inputs and can cause local eutrophication and potential loss of Charales. Despite variation from complete seasonal removal of Charales biomass to undetectable grazing effects by herbivorous birds, evidence suggests little effect of avian grazing on biomass accumulation or the stability of community composition (under otherwise stable conditions), but we urge more research on this under-researched topic. We also lack investigations of the relative foraging profitability of different Charales organs to waterbirds and the degree of viability of gyrogonites (fertilised and calcified oospores), vegetative bulbils and plant fragments after passage through the guts of waterbirds. We especially need to understand better how much the carbonate armour of these organs affects their viability/dispersal via waterbirds and urge more research on these neglected plants and their relationships and interactions with other organisms in the aquatic biota.

In major harbors and ports in the United States and its territories, the US Army Corps of Engineers maintains federal navigation channels in proximity to coral reefs (e.g., Honolulu Harbor, HI; Miami Harbor, FL; Apra Harbor, Guam) and other sensitive habitats. To effectively predict potential adverse impacts from dredging activities near these sensitive habitats, a holistic approach to improve understanding of the pressures on these habitats is needed to foster a more complete prediction of risk drivers. To achieve this, risk-based frameworks that account for the full range of natural and anthropogenic impacts need to be adapted and applied specifically for assessing and managing indirect dredging impacts on sensitive environments. In this article, we address this need by incorporating a drivers-pressures-stressors-condition-response (DPSCR4 ) conceptual framework to broaden a comprehensive conceptual model of the coupled human-ecological system. To help understand these complex interactions, DPSCR4 was applied to evaluate dredging and other unrelated environmental pressures (e.g., terrestrial runoff) in a proof-of-concept dredging project in Honolulu Harbor, Hawai'i, USA, with a focus on the indirect effects of dredge plumes. Particle tracking models and risk-based tools were used to evaluate sediment resuspended during a hypothetical mechanical dredging activity near sensitive coral habitats. Stoplight indicators were developed to predict indirect sediment plume impacts on coral and then compared to exposure modeling results. The strengths and limitations of the approach are presented and the incorporation of the risk framework into environmental management decisions is discussed. PURPOSE: Sulbactam/durlobactam is a combination antibiotic designed to target Acinetobacter baumannii, including carbapenem-resistant and multidrug-resistant strains. The objective of this study was to determine the physical compatibility of sulbactam/durlobactam solution during simulated Y-site administration with 95 intravenous (IV) drugs. METHODS: Vials of sulbactam/durlobactam solution were diluted in 0.9% sodium chloride injection to a volume of 100 mL (the final concentration of both drugs was 15 mg/mL). All other IV drugs were reconstituted according to the manufacturer's recommendations and diluted with 0.9% sodium chloride injection to the upper range of concentrations used clinically or tested undiluted as intended for administration. Y-site conditions were simulated by mixing 5 mL of sulbactam/durlobactam with 5 mL of the tested drug solutions in a 1:1 ratio. Solutions were inspected for physical characteristics (clarity, color, and Tyndall effect), turbidity, and pH changes before admixture, immediately post admixture, and over 4 hours. Incompatibility was defined as any observed precipitation, significant color change, positive Tyndall test, or turbidity change of ≥0.5 nephelometric turbidity unit during the observation period. RESULTS: Sulbactam/durlobactam was physically compatible with 38 out of 42 antimicrobials tested (90.5%) and compatible overall with 86 of 95 drugs tested (90.5%). Incompatibility was observed with albumin, amiodarone hydrochloride, ceftaroline fosamil, ciprofloxacin, daptomycin, levofloxacin, phenytoin sodium, vecuronium, and propofol. CONCLUSION: The Y-site compatibility of sulbactam/durlobactam with 95 IV drugs was described. These compatibility data will assist pharmacists and nurses to safely coordinate administration of IV medications with sulbactam/durlobactam.
